How a Home Backup Generator Works

Powered by Never Dark

A home backup generator ensures your home stays powered during an outage, whether it lasts hours or weeks. Our Generac generators automatically detect power loss, start up, and restore electricity—without any manual effort.

How It Works: Step by Step

  1. Utility Power Fails
A storm, equipment failure, or other issue cuts off your electricity.
  2. Generator Detects the Outage
Within seconds, the automatic transfer switch senses the outage and starts a 6-second delay to ignore brief flickers.
  3. Generator Starts Automatically
The system signals the generator to start, 12-second delay to bring generator up the speed.
  4. Power Is Restored
The transfer switch safely disconnects the utility line and connects the generator, supplying electricity to your home.
  5. Utility Power Returns
When stable utility power is detected, the transfer switch reconnects the utility line, and the generator runs a brief cool-down cycle before shutting off. It then stands ready for the next outage.

The Automatic Transfer Switch: The Heart of the System

Unlike basic generators, our systems include an automatic transfer switch as standard. This device continuously monitors utility power and seamlessly switches to generator power during an outage—no toggles, knobs, extension cords, or gas cans required. It ensures your home stays powered, even if you’re not there, providing true peace of mind.
